Best Settings for Night Time

Hello,
I have the camera working with my raspberry pi and it seems to work alright besides at night. I am trying to have the camera look outside and watch for animals and am wondering if someone could give me the best starting settings to see in low light. I would like there to be little as possible lag or choppiness. I am trying it with an IR light as well and I seem to have that working good.
